Greenwich World Hunger Association

Helping alleviate hunger one project at a time since 1976

Our History

Greenwich World Hunger Association (GWHA) was founded in 1976. After a series of meetings on global poverty at local Greenwich, CT churches, a small group of people got together to discuss ways they might be part of the solution to hunger.
In its early years GWHA sponsored programs and lectures, encouraged annual days of fast, and organized hunger walks in which several hundred Greenwich residents participated to raise awareness and funds
In recent years the focus of GWHA has been on helping people increase their food supplies and income through self-sustaining projects managed by trusted individuals or small, local organizations.

Our Mission

The mission of Greenwich World Hunger Association (GWHA) is: To help alleviate world hunger through education of the community and promotion of self-help programs for the hungry. GWHA helps poor communities establish projects which will become sustainable and will increase family income and/or food supplies. GWHA also supports educational programs, job training facilities, and scholarships. The basic mission is to invest in income- or food-producing projects and education with some support given to programs to help a community well-being, such as water and nutritional improvements.

How We Do It

GWHA raises money from two mailings a year to a list of about 300 people. We remain a totally volunteer organization, so 96% of donations go directly to the projects. We have no overhead costs our only costs are printing, mailing, software, etc.
